How George Bush Stole the 2000 Election.
A Bedtime Story.
Many years ago two men wanted to be President of the United
States of America. Their names were George Bush and Al
Gore. They campaigned very hard. The night of the election
before all the votes were counted Dan Rather said Al had won
the state of Florida, which meant he would almost certainly win
the Presidency. But then later he said he was mistaken and that
it was too close to tell who really won. When all the votes were
counted, the media told everyone that, in fact, George Bush had
won.
But it was very close. So Al asked Florida to count the votes
again. So they did. And again George had won, but again, it
was very close. So close that Al was sure if they just kept
counting, maybe they would get a result where he won. So he
asked them to count the votes again. And again they did. But
again, George won. This made Al and his supporters very sad.
They blamed the machines. They were sure if they counted the
votes by hand, Al would eventually win.
So Al Gore decided to become the first man in the history of our
country to try and sue his way into the White House. The only
problem was, there wasn't enough time to count all the votes in
the whole state by hand. So Al asked the Florida Supreme Court
to change the laws and make it okay to count just the votes in
the areas where people liked him and not count the votes in the
areas were people liked George. The court said okay, and
instead of following the rules set by the state's legislature, told
the vote-counters to "divine the intent of the voter."
George got mad. The court changed the rules in the middle of
an election and now votes that shouldn't have been counted were
going to be counted. Making matters worse, voters in the areas
that liked George weren't going to get the same treatment. Their
"intent" would never be "divined."
So George went to the Supreme Court and asked to have the
recounts stopped. Some of the justices said they had no right to
intervene, it was a state issue. The others said that because it
was about the Presidency, it was a federal issue.
Those judges ruled that it was against the law for the Florida
Supreme Court to change the state's rules in the middle of an
election. They also said it violated the constitution to pass new
rules that only applied to some of the voters. And so, Al never
got to keep counting his votes and since the last vote count said
George had won, he got to be President.
Al’s supporters and the media were very mad. They said, “We’
re going to count those votes anyway and show everyone that Al
really won and he should be President and George is a bad man
for not letting him be President.” So they all went to down to
Florida and counted the votes just like Al wanted them counted.
But to their dismay, even when they counted the votes in the
unfair way that Al wanted them counted, George still won. They
did not like that result, so they decided there was no need to
write news stories telling everyone that the election results were
accurate and Al really had lost.
And that is how George Bush stole the 2000 election.
