Al Gore Still Counting His Florida Votes from
the 2000 Election
by Heywood U. Reedmore

NASHVILLE - Al Gore
has publicly stated that
he has no plans to run
for President in the
2008 election. But few
people know the real
reason why. According
to a source close to the
former Vice President,
when Gore is not out
promoting his upcoming
movie  "
An Inconvenient
Truth," he spends the
majority of his free time
hand-counting his Florida votes from the
2000 election.

Still Curious After All these Years
“He made such a big deal about every vote being counted that when
the recount money ran out, he felt he had to see to it personally,”
said a former aide who agreed to give Spolitics an exclusive
interview.  "Between this and the promotional tour for his new
movie, he just doesn't have the time or energy for a presidential
campaign."

But that’s not the only reason.  According to our source, Gore still
believes he carried the state in 2000.  “News organizations went to
Florida and counted the ballots in the contested areas, but
they didn't
come up with any conclusive answers.  This is the only way for Al
to prove he really did win,” says the aide.

Since millions of votes were cast in Florida, the task consumes
most of Mr. Gore’s free time, leaving little if any time to run for
higher office.  “There’s no way he’ll be done counting all the votes
in time to run for President in the 2008 election,” says our source.
“Right now his goal is to be done counting by 2012.”

Presidential Hopes Dashed
After John Kerry’s poor showing in the 2004 election, Gore
expressed a desire to run again in 2008, but those hopes were
dashed when, as his former aide put it, “He lost count.  He was at
one million, nine hundred and forty-two thousand, three hundred
and sixty-eight when he lost his concentration and forgot where he
was,” the aide said.

Gore was distracted by a story
on the nightly news about Bill
    Clinton and later blamed the
    former president for the setback.
“He was furious,” the aide said.
    “He shouted something about
    Clinton conspiring to keep him
out of the oval office.  Then he
    threw down the ballots and
stormed out.  He didn’t start re-
    counting again until weeks later.
He lost a lot of time.”

    An Eye on 2012
Still, Gore believes if he can
maintain his current pace, he will
be done counting his votes in
time to run for election in 2012.  As a precautionary measure to
make sure he reaches that goal, he has blocked all cable news
stations from his television.  “He demands a Clinton-free zone when
he’s counting,” said the aide.  “It helps him focus on the numbers.”
