Sticking It to Them

How did Senator Dianne Feinstein react to Senate Republicans forcing a vote on whether or not to “cut and run” from Iraq? Here’s how the New York Times quotes her: “It’s just kind of a jump-ball, stick-it-to-them kind of thing.”

First off: jump-ball? What the hell is she talking about? Someone should explain to her what a jump-ball actually is.

Second, considering Democrats were starting to chant the “bring ‘em home now” refrain again—a number that reportedly has Iraqi officials worried—it makes sense for the U.S. government to take a stand and send a message. Apparently, though, asking a Democrat to put their vote where their mouth is and go on the record is the same as “sticking it to them.”

However, we do seem to be sticking to some people.

While certain media outfits were assuring us Zarqawi’s death wouldn’t lead to improved security in Iraq, U.S. and Iraqi forces were busy carrying out 452 raids. 104 insurgents were killed, 759 “anti-Iraqi elements” were captured and 28 arms caches seized.

Meanwhile, in order to put the squeeze on the Taliban militants in Afghanistan, allied forces have launched “Operation Mountain Thrust”, the largest offensive since the 2001 invasion.

EuroNews reports:

Coalition troops in Afghanistan have killed around 40 insurgents in a crack-down against Taliban fighters.

[--snip--]

The 40 rebels were killed in a remote mountainous stronghold in the south eastern Paktika province, on the border with Pakistan.

We certainly have the momentum. Now let’s see what we can do with it.
