The Point of McCain’s Celeb Ad

Barack Obama didn’t speak to Germans as a Presidential candidate or as a U.S. Senator. By his own words, he was there as just another U.S. citizen, albeit one with a lot of fame. There’s a word for that: celebrity. The speech itself was roundly panned as being thin and hallow, but everyone agreed, it was a great photo op.

The talking head circuit is accusing the ad of being a stunt, a distraction from the issues. But can’t the same be said of Barack Obama’s European publicity tour — and specifically — the Berlin event that’s featured in the ad. U.S. consumers are feeling the pain at the pump and they need real solutions — solutions Barack Obama opposes — not platitudes delivered to a throng of foreign fans. That’s the point of the ad.
